Explore the history, physiology, philosophy, and practice of breath through a comprehensive five-day immersion with Mark Stephens.
Breathing is the only vital function that is both automatic and voluntary, making it a unique bridge between body and mind, physiology and psychology, conscious intention and unconscious processes. For thousands of years, contemplative traditions have recognized the breath as a gateway to health, meditation, and spiritual inquiry. Modern science, meanwhile, has revealed extraordinary insights into how breathing influences nearly every system of the body, from cardiovascular and respiratory function to emotional regulation, attention, and cognition.
This five-day immersion explores breathing through both of these lenses—ancient wisdom and contemporary science—while inviting participants into a deeply personal and experiential relationship with the breath itself.
Rather than presenting a single doctrine or technique, the immersion examines the remarkable evolution of breathing practices across cultures and centuries, from the Vedas and Upanishads to Buddhism, Tantra, Haṭha Yoga, and modern yoga. Along the way, we’ll distinguish historical teachings from later interpretations, examine common misconceptions, and explore how traditional ideas about prāṇa, the vayus, nadis, and subtle body can be understood with both intellectual rigor and experiential openness.
Each day combines lectures, discussion, movement practice, pranayama, meditation, and self-inquiry. Participants will investigate the anatomy and physiology of breathing, the role of the diaphragm, oxygen and carbon dioxide, nervous system regulation, and the growing body of scientific research on breathing and well-being. At the same time, they will cultivate increasingly refined awareness through carefully sequenced breathing practices that support steadiness, vitality, clarity, resilience, and contemplative presence.
Throughout the immersion, participants are encouraged to ask questions, think critically, and engage directly with their own experience. Historical scholarship, scientific evidence, and traditional teachings are presented not as competing authorities, but as complementary ways of understanding one of the most fundamental dimensions of being alive.
Whether you are a yoga teacher seeking to deepen your understanding of pranayama or a dedicated practitioner wishing to enrich your personal practice, this immersion offers a comprehensive and integrated exploration of the breath. By the end of the week, participants will have a clearer understanding of how breathing works, how breathing practices have evolved, how they can be practiced safely and effectively, and how a lifelong relationship with the breath can support greater health, awareness, resilience, and human flourishing.
Participants completing the immersion will receive a 30-hour Teaching Pranayama Continuing Education Certificate, with all instructional hours eligible for CEU credit.

Wednesday
Simply Breathing: Awareness Begins Here
The immersion begins with the most fundamental practice of all: observing the breath without trying to change it. Through mindful movement and simple breathing practices, we’ll cultivate relaxed awareness, establish a baseline for the week, and discover why awareness always precedes technique.
Thursday
Moving with the Breath
Explore the intimate relationship between breath and movement through an all-levels yoga practice emphasizing fluidity, stability, and presence. Rather than forcing the breath to fit the movement, we’ll allow breath to become the organizing principle of the practice.
Friday
Breath, Attention, and Presence
Experience the profound effects of slowing the breath through an intelligently sequenced practice integrating movement, foundational pranayama, and periods of stillness. Learn why slower breathing has become one of the most compelling areas of contemporary respiratory and contemplative research.
Saturday
Prana in Practice
Drawing inspiration from traditional teachings on the five vayus, this experiential class explores different qualities and directions of breath without requiring belief in any particular model of the subtle body. The emphasis is on curiosity, embodiment, and discovering how breath can transform the experience of practice.
Sunday
The Breath as Lifelong Practice
The final class weaves together the week’s themes into an integrated practice of movement, pranayama, meditation, and deep relaxation. Participants leave with a sustainable framework for continuing to explore the breath long after the immersion has ended.
